About the role

  • Phlebotomist collecting blood specimens and performing point-of-care testing for UMass Memorial Health. Essential patient care position requiring reliable attendance and flexibility in location coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary from patients
  • Performs EKG, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing on inpatients and outpatients as required
  • Performs venipuncture and capillary phlebotomy procedures on patients using appropriate specimen collection equipment and techniques
  • Reviews requisition and orders from physicians to ensure appropriate tests are drawn and tests meet guidelines for Medical Necessity
  • Prepares Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) for tests that do not meet Medical Necessity guidelines and obtains appropriate signatures from patient and self
  • Processes specimens including centrifugation, pour-off, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging
  • Provides essential patient data and insurance information for registration of specimens
  • Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems

Requirements

  • High School graduate with successful completion from a recognized program for training in phlebotomy
  • Basic life support certification required within 3 months of employment
  • Prior documented experience performing phlebotomy
  • FLEX - This is a flex position; staff may be required to travel and provide coverage at other campuses or locations based on the needs of the department
  • ESSENTIAL - This is an essential patient care position requiring reliable and punctual attendance
