About the role
- Medical Technologist performs complex chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests at UMass Memorial Health. Responsibilities include guiding techs, interpreting results, and ensuring lab quality and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Works with considerable independence to perform and interpret various chemical, microscopic, and/or bacteriologic tests to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
- Follows established protocols to perform various tests, including the most complex, for an assigned area.
- Provides guidance and consultation to Medical Technologist I’s and Medical Lab Technicians in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results.
- Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken.
- Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
- Assists in development new test and quality procedures for assigned area.
- Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
- Ensures preventative maintenance for equipment in the assigned area.
- Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation.
- May assist in the roll-out of new equipment and equipment modifications.
- Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
- Instructs students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
- Maintains accurate records of tests performed, using computer-based systems.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of an accredited four-year school of Medical Technology
- ASCP certification as an MT is preferred
- Three years of related experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
