About the role

  • Supervise day-to-day operations of the trading desk, ensuring efficient, accurate, compliant execution.
  • Provide immediate operational management during shifts; manage workflow and monitor risk adherence.
  • Act as first point of escalation for operational, market, or system issues and coordinate effective resolution under pressure.
  • Direct the shift team in optimising portfolio dispatch across wholesale and balancing markets, with focus on managing elevated technical and market risk.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, trader training and performance management under direction of the Trading Manager (GB).
  • Monitor and report team performance against operational KPIs and shift objectives; support production of reporting mechanisms and board packs.
  • Maintain proactive communication with the Trading Manager and Senior Traders to ensure alignment on market strategy, shift performance and emerging risks.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance trading processes, tools, and workflows and foster a culture of accountability and operational discipline.

Requirements

  • Solid understanding of short-term GB power and gas market operations, including intraday and day-ahead trading.
  • Working knowledge of trading platforms, position management tools, and operational reporting systems.
  • In depth understanding of regulatory requirements, compliance standards, and risk management frameworks within energy trading.
  • Demonstrated track record in an energy trading environment, preferably with exposure to intraday or short-term markets.
  • Experience leading, supervising or mentoring a trading or operations team.
  • Practical involvement in delivering day-to-day trading activities and resolving operational challenges.
  • Familiarity with recruiting and onboarding trading team members, including initial candidate screening.
  • Exposure to pricing commercial contracts such as ancillary services.
  • Experience with automation, algorithmic trading or BESS optimisation (desirable).
  • Degree in a STEM, economics, mathematics, engineering, finance, or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).
