About the role

  • Lead U.S. HIV Treatment communications and advocacy at biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences. Manage public affairs team to enhance communication strategies and patient outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to drive U.S. communications and advocacy about Gilead’s HIV Treatment portfolio and pipeline.
  • Set a vision and priorities for the team, provide direction as well as hands-on support as needed, and ensure team members have development opportunities and continue to grow in their careers at Gilead.
  • Engage with leaders in U.S. commercial, Medical Affairs and Government Affairs to help drive cross-functional strategy and tactical plans that assert Gilead’s longstanding leadership in and commitment to HIV treatment.
  • Integrate information from across the organization to ensure comprehensive “one PA” approach in HIV treatment can be communicated across external and internal audiences in a compelling and consistent way.
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to horizon scan and proactively address emerging issues, with an important focus on the policy / political environment.
  • Design and implement disease awareness programs that inform and mobilize people living with viral diseases, encourage at-risk individuals to engage in care, and help to de-stigmatize diseases among the general public.
  • Support ongoing and pending product launches in the U.S.
  • Inform priorities, collaborate on programs and ensure integrated cross-functional execution related to the HIV treatment in other Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, media relations, community engagement and corporate giving. Programs may include corporate advertising, corporate website and intranet content development, advocacy group engagement, funding opportunity announcements, among others.
  • Maintain relationships with key top-tier and trade reporters to shape reporting on Gilead’s HIV treatment product portfolio, pipeline and patient support.
  • Manage agency partners, providing agency teams with appropriate information and oversight to effectively implement programs in compliance with Gilead’s business conduct policies.
  • Manage budgets to target, ensuring appropriate investment in priority work and identifying ways to optimize resources.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a BA degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field and 16+ years of relevant experience, which includes 14 years of healthcare public relations experience or 14 years of relevant experience with a master’s degree or PhD.
  • Demonstrated experience driving communications plans that support business priorities
  • Experience leading teams and supporting both team performance and individual team members’ development
  • Expertise in media relations and issues management
  • Ability to interact with senior management, academic experts and patient advocates appropriately, with confidence and ease
  • Ability to influence others and drive alignment across diverse teams
  • A passion for engaging in public health and policy issues
  • Prior experience in HIV and/or viral hepatitis communications, advocacy, government affairs, marketing or medical affairs is required
  • Experience working outside of the US is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company.
