About the role

  • Lead work to build people-power across states: recruit, train, and sustain a diverse base of volunteers and members, and develop their capacity for independent leadership and action
  • Proactively build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including community leaders, partners, policymakers, and others
  • Represent Common Cause in coalition spaces, including leading coalitions
  • Develop strategic plans to leverage existing organizing strengths and tactics, and implement new approaches that support a focus on collective, in-person organizing
  • Lead key components of the national organizing strategy, including leadership development, base-building and relational organizing, partnerships and coalitions, strategic actions, and program evaluation
  • Provide guidance and informal mentorship to interns, volunteers, and team members, coordinating their work to support team goals
  • Analyze challenges with, and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of, our state-level organizing to propose actionable and strategic solutions to senior leadership
  • Provide customized support plans, coaching, and technical assistance to state teams and organizers
  • Create support plans that can be scaled across teams
  • Develop an organizing curricula (including toolkits and resources) to be used across our organization
  • Develop and facilitate peer learning and collaboration across states, making judgments on best practices and knowledge-sharing opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Experience leading successful grassroots organizing and base-building efforts at the state level
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate effective trainings, and to coach organizers to improve their skills and impact, both in-person and virtually
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the unique aspects of the political dynamic and key decision-makers within at least one state, with a preference for candidates who have existing relationships with these people and organizations
  • Experience managing coalitions or groups that represent stakeholders with diverse interests to achieve a goal
  • A track record of leading organization-wide change initiatives
  • Experience leading successful local- or state-level organizing campaign related to democracy, elections, voting rights and civil rights
  • Demonstrated understanding of the legislative process in at least one state
  • Have managed at least one staff member, intern and/or Fellow
  • Ideally you have worked in an organization that operates across multiple states or regions
  • Ability to travel around the country up to 40% of the year (especially during legislative cycles) for team, cross-team, and/or all staff retreats
  • Willing to have a social media presence on behalf of Common Cause, including being tagged on posts and creating content on behalf of the organization
  • Per our nonpartisan policy, Common Cause staff members may not currently be in elected office (or running for office); on the Steering Committee or Finance Committee for any political candidate; or affiliated with the leadership of a political party
  • Common Cause is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time; if hired, you will be asked to produce documentation for authorization to work in the US
  • Strong commitment to Common Cause’s nonpartisan mission and to advancing civil rights through our pro-democracy agenda
  • A commitment to equity in the goals of your work and in how you work with others
  • A track record of working collaboratively with others, with the ability to build rapport, trust, and credibility with multiple stakeholders with diverse interests
  • Ability to navigate organizational and power dynamics, respectfully navigate conflict while maintaining your values, and influence others to adopt changes to meet common goals
  • Ability to compel action through both written and verbal communication, including distilling complex concepts for a broad audience
  • Innovative and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to navigate through ambiguity to achieve goals
  • Ability to manage and meet deadlines for multiple short- and long-term priorities at once, with high attention to detail; strong organization skills, and the ability to manage your time independently
  • Openness to feedback and awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth
  • Familiarity with office productivity tools including Microsoft Office, Slack, and Zoom
