About the role

  • Provide high-quality and holistic legal services to Indigenous People
  • Collaborate with other staff in the Indigenous People’s Unit (IPU)
  • Work on litigation, appearing in court and administrative proceedings
  • Handle cases involving Indian Child Welfare Act, racial discrimination, criminal cases, and tribal rights
  • Engage in community networking to strengthen Pine Tree’s reputation
  • Community engagement and networking to ensure access to legal services
  • Provide supervision support for paralegals and interns
  • Develop written client education materials and provide outreach and/or training

Requirements

  • Must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the state of Maine
  • Admitted to the practice of law in Maine
  • Eligible to practice under Maine Bar Admission Rule 11(c) while working at Pine Tree
  • Admission to the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Tribal Courts (or eligibility to be admitted)
  • Previous litigation experience
  • Experience working with individuals who are low income, and/or who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault is helpful
  • Indian Law experience and/or extensive course work in Indian Law through law school
  • Regular travel throughout the service area should be expected
