About the role
- Principal Software Engineer designing and developing features for AI-powered tools at Progress. Leading technical efforts and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and develop features related to OpenEdge Development Tools
- Lead the evolution of development features, enhancing performance, usability, and diagnostic capabilities
- Drive the integration of AI-powered features within the OpenEdge Developer Tools ecosystem
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to the development team
- Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Architects, QA, and UX teams to deliver robust, scalable, and user-centric solutions
- Analyze and optimize performance issues using profiling tools and diagnostic frameworks
- Ensure quality and maintainability through automated testing, code reviews, and continuous integration pipelines
- Stay current with emerging technologies in IDE tooling, AI-assisted development, and performance optimization
- Adhere to Agile practices and methodologies
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent is required
- 8+ years of professional experience in a product development organization
- Proficient in Java, with openness to learn and adopt other relevant technologies such as JavaScript and TypeScript
- Proven experience in developing VS Code extensions or Eclipse plugins
- Strong foundation in web development, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, RESTful services, and modern front-end frameworks such as React or Angular
- Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design, and software architecture principles
- Strong knowledge of database concepts, query optimization, and performance tuning for scalability and reliability
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar
- Familiarity with Node.js and modern JavaScript frameworks used in IDE tooling or developer platforms
- Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and version control systems such as Git
- Expertise in profiling, diagnostics, and memory performance optimization on the JVM or similar platforms
- Awareness of software security best practices and ability to identify, assess, and mitigate vulnerabilities
- Comfortable working on both Unix/Linux and Windows operating systems
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate within cross-functional teams
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
