About the role
- Backend Engineer designing and implementing scalable systems for consumer tech company with 400M users worldwide. Owning features end-to-end from design to production in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Design & Implement Scalable Systems: Build high-performance backend architectures for mobile and web clients using Node.js and Python.
- Own End-to-End: Take full responsibility for the lifecycle of your services—ideation, implementation, deployment (GCP/Firebase), and continuous optimization.
- AI & Media Integration: Integrate LLMs and media workflows (STT/TTS, image/video/audio processing). You’ll manage model serving, inference performance, and the latency/cost tradeoffs involved.
- Architect Async Workflows: Implement robust event-driven systems using queues and tasks to handle heavy media and AI workloads.
- Simplify Relentlessly: Evaluate every component and process. Your mission is to strip away unnecessary complexity to build minimalist, future-proof architectures.
- Optimize Performance: Proactively identify bottlenecks to improve latency, throughput, and costs.
- Ensure Backend Quality: Establish robust error handling, security best practices, and end-to-end observability to ensure production reliability.
- Collaborate: Partner with Cross-functional teams (Mobile, Product, DevOps and AI) to design and ship features that matter.
Requirements
- Experience: 2+ years of professional experience as a Backend Engineer, with a track record of building consumer-facing products at scale.
- Technical Excellence: Strong proficiency in Node.js and Python. You have a deep understanding of CS fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms.
- Infrastructure Knowledge: Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and/or Firebase. You are comfortable with production debugging and observability habits.
- System Design: A solid grasp of databases, API design and security best practices.
- AI Familiarity: Experience deploying and optimizing AI models in production, including familiarity with external AI APIs and their performance considerations.
- Communication: Proficiency in English with the ability to explain complex engineering decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical teams.
- Education: A BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- NICE TO HAVE:
- Cloud Tooling: Experience with GCP specific tools like Pub/Sub, Cloud Run, GKE, BigQuery, or Cloud Functions.
- Real-time Patterns: Familiarity with SSE or WebSockets for real-time communication.
- DevOps Basics: Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Event-Driven Systems: Experience with message brokers like Kafka, RabbitMQ, or SQS.
