About the role

  • Communications Manager crafting compelling content for the Chicago Abortion Fund and ensuring effective messaging across channels. Supports advocacy and development teams with media and digital content.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee consistent messaging and branding of all CAF communications.
  • Lead design of all publications and visual media (Canva, Adobe).
  • Implement social strategies, content creation and posting -- posts, videos, and graphics across all current social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter).
  • Ensure that communications systems, practices, and content are in alignment with CAF’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Manage website updates, content, and functionality; monitor site traffic, trends, and performance.
  • Manage the production and dissemination of CAF’s newsletters; coordinate and edit all other action alerts and email blasts.
  • Manage production of factsheets for internal and external use; manage external messaging documents and toolkits.
  • Direct the development and growth of relationships with local media partners and outlets.
  • Serve as lead writer of press releases; distribute press releases; coordinate with partner organizations when applicable.
  • Support in drafting remarks for staff members.
  • Create communications toolkits for partners/public use.
  • Train and support CAF staff, volunteers, and community members in building storytelling skills to publicly share CAF’s organizational story, as well as any related personal stories.
  • Serve as lead communications support for community events, rallies, etc. Responsibilities can include: live streaming content, live tweeting, capturing photos and videos for later usage.
  • Lead communications tasks/deliverables for CAF’s events and campaigns.
  • Monitor earned media, coverage, and trends in the field.
  • Document, evaluate and analyze metrics of CAF’s communications strategies including social media and digital campaigns.
  • Manage CAF’s communications calendar.
  • Develop and manage an image and video library.
  • Attend meetings relevant to the Communications, Advocacy and Development departments.
  • Support team with execution of other key projects and strategies as they relate to broader communications needs and organizational strategy.
  • Maintain social media tracking on all activists’ forms and landing pages.
  • Format email templates for fundraising emails.
  • Create and maintain EveryActions forms, calls to action, advocacy campaigns, events, and other EveryAction tools for programming and communication staff.
  • Create and maintain EveryAction automations to properly enforce member status, activist codes, business rules, engagement scoring, and reporting.
  • Support with developing new campaigns, automation, member journeys, templates, landing pages, segmentation based on Activist Codes, SMS, and other EveryAction communications.
  • Develop EveryAction forms, automation, and integrations with multiple websites.
  • Participate in reproductive justice movement-building initiatives such as coalition meetings, rallies, lobby days, and community partner events as appropriate.
  • Works pro-actively and in good faith to support and strengthen the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Co-create and maintain a culture that fosters deep collaboration, trust, and coordination across functional organizational areas.
  • Maintains a collaborative, positive, professional and friendly approach to working with supervisor, other staff, grantees, and external stakeholders.
  • Actively participate in required convenings, summits, retreats, and staff meetings, and participate in required staff communications.
  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by CAF, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to the role.
  • Support and participate in coalition work, as assigned by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • 3 years of related work experience and demonstrated success in creating, managing, and developing engaging content for websites, social media, press campaigns and email campaigns in a nonprofit or related setting.
  • Skilled storyteller with experience creating strategic narratives for press, donors, and directly impacted audiences.
  • Commitment to reproductive justice and abortion access for all people.
  • Knowledge of intersectionality and the impact that privilege and oppression can have on people’s ability to access abortion.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and juggle multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously; excellent time management and project management.
  • Attention to accuracy and detail, strong organizational skills and follow-through.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to tell compelling stories and distill complex topics into effective, understandable messages that inform and engage targeted audiences.
  • Experience coordinating and inspiring people to shape and share their stories, as well as speak on behalf of organizations.
  • Specific knowledge of best communication practices regarding abortion access and reproductive justice.
  • Knowledge of the latest advances in effective use of digital and social media for effective communication, including for online communities.
  • Strong graphic design skills; mobile or traditional video or photography experience is a plus.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing needs and environments.
  • Experience with confidential information management; ability to work in sensitive situations with utmost discretion.
  • Proficiency in: Google Suite; social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok,Facebook); website content management systems (Squarespace); Canva; Zoom; Slack; creating email marketing campaigns; and online event management.
