About the role
- Take full ownership of in-house payroll operations, embedded in Finance with a dotted line to HR
- Run and manage monthly UK payroll processes, including salary changes, bonuses, pensions, starters and leavers
- Act as the internal expert for payroll queries from employees and managers
- Keep payroll records up to date and ensure HMRC and pension compliance
- Maintain and enhance the in-house payroll system and tooling
- Administer employee benefits such as pensions and ensure regulatory compliance
- Own payroll reporting, journal reconciliations, and data analysis for Finance
- Monitor UK and European payroll legislation changes to ensure continuous compliance
- Support expansion to additional European regions over time
Requirements
- Solid experience running UK payroll end-to-end, ideally in a lead or standalone capacity
- Deep understanding of UK payroll, tax, and pension regulations
- High attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
- Confident working within finance systems (e.g. HRIS, accounting software, in-house tools)
- Proactive, collaborative approach—comfortable driving process improvements in a fast-paced team
- Able to step into other areas of finance if needed
- Hands-on experience with Xero for payroll/accounting (nice to have)
- Exposure to a start-up or scale-up environment (nice to have)
- CIPP qualification (or working towards it) (nice to have)
- Legally authorised to work in United Kingdom
- Willingness to confirm visa/sponsorship status if applicable
