Project Controlling & Compliance Manager ensuring efficient and responsible funding usage for smallholder coffee farmers. Collaborate with management and external auditors to maximize organizational impact in development projects.
Responsibilities
Ensure that our funds are used efficiently and responsibly
Support informed financial decision-making, safeguard compliance, and strengthen our internal systems
Report to our Country Leads who manage our project portfolio and to the management team
Collaborate with external auditors and our accounting department
Develop and maintain a cross-portfolio controlling structure
Review the financial setup of project proposals
Verify financial reports against budgets and donor regulations
Commission and coordinate external financial, compliance and safeguarding audits
Ensure timely resolution of audit findings in coordination with Country Leads and management
Ensure consistency of financial data and maintain financial databases and dashboards (Reframe, Power BI)
Analyze and consolidate project-level financial data into organizational KPIs for internal and external reporting
Improve and standardize HWG’s financial, compliance, and reporting requirements for project partners
Adapt internal frameworks to accommodate innovative approaches (e.g., Social Return on Investment, outcome-based financing)
Requirements
Degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field
Minimum 5 years of professional experience in project controlling or grant management, preferably in NGOs, foundations or international development
Strong knowledge of compliance and accountability requirements in the non-profit/development sector
Proven track record managing financial or compliance audits
Analytical mindset with attention to detail and a reliable, structured working style
Effective communicator, comfortable collaborating across cultures and functions
Self-starter who thrives in a small, dynamic organization
Interest in rural development and evidence-based work
Willingness to travel to project countries occasionally
Valid work permit for Germany
Fluency in English; basic German is a plus
