About the role

  • Provide support and assistance to ODC lawyers in investigating and prosecuting grievances against licensed legal professionals
  • Assist in administering departmental programs and responsibilities (such as costs, probations, and discipline histories)
  • Provide administrative support to the ODC management team and perform Paralegal duties as assigned by the Department Administrator and/or Disciplinary Counsel
  • Assist with more complex cases and have major responsibilities for administrative tasks in the office
  • Analyze and recommend solutions to complex legal issues and assist disciplinary counsel in strategic planning and decision making
  • Train and mentor less experienced paralegals
  • Review voluminous grievance files and other evidence to summarize relevant facts and potential issues and identify important supporting documents
  • Perform legal research and review and analyze the facts and law of a case using law libraries, Internet legal research sites, and Lexis/Nexis
  • Retrieve and research court files and public records; obtain medical and agency records
  • Assist in interviews of witnesses and grievants, draft investigative subpoenas, and prepare witness declarations
  • Make arrangements for depositions, prepare questions, outlines, exhibits, and aids for disciplinary counsel
  • Communicate with participants about hearing dates and status; review and summarize transcripts of testimony
  • Draft pleadings and other legal documents for prosecution of ethical misconduct charges
  • Provide litigation and hearing support: organize, mark, and prepare exhibits; ensure filing and service; create timelines and demonstrative aids; prepare PowerPoint presentations; arrange court reporters and facilities
  • Act as clerk during hearings by marking exhibits, recording admission/rejection, taking notes, and conferring with disciplinary counsel
  • Assist in administration of departmental programs such as collection of disciplinary costs, administrating disciplinary probation files, and preparing discipline history reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Paralegal Degree or Certificate; or comparable degree in a related field
  • Education Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree (B.A., B.S.)
  • Minimum of 3 years Paralegal experience, to include advanced document drafting, legal research, and data management
  • Experience navigating law libraries and conducting Internet legal research, and research on Westlaw or Lexis Nexis
  • Advanced legal research skills preferred for identifying legal issues and finding relevant case law, court rules, and statutes
  • Previous employment in a Paralegal position in a law office or in a government or regulatory environment preferred
  • Excellent analytical, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize, work efficiently, and use good judgment
  • Excellent reading and writing skills, and attention to detail
  • Excellent presentation and oral and written communication skills
  • Experienced in working large complex electronic case files
  • General knowledge of legal procedures (will train regarding WSBA’s discipline procedures)
  • Proficiency with Internet research, legal research systems, court databases
  • Advanced ability to use computers and applications, including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), Microsoft 365 (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive), Adobe Acrobat, electronic case and document management systems, and electronic legal research platforms, particularly Lexis/Nexis
  • Strong technical aptitude to quickly learn new technology, and existing WSBA systems, programs, software, and Microsoft Co-pilot
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Possess a strong teamwork mentality and high level of professionalism and appropriate social skills
  • Basic ability to operate photocopiers, scanners, and other standard office equipment
  • Familiarity with Blue Book and creating Tables of Authorities preferred
  • Editorial/proofreading skills preferred
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis upon hire (not eligible for Sponsorship)
  • WSBA Staff must reside within the State of Washington at the time of hire, and during active employment status
