About the role

  • Lead System Impact, Technical Feasibility, and de-registration assessments to evaluate reliability and operability impacts of new, modified, or disconnected connections using applicable IESO, NERC and NPCC reliability standards.
  • Oversee and prepare reports containing study results, required system upgrades, connection requirements, and recommendations to issue notices of approval or disapproval.
  • Validate registration data and re-assess proposed connections if registration data differs materially.
  • Coordinate M&SO support for regional and bulk power system planning and prepare evidence for connection applicants (OEB leave to construct) and inquiries from neighboring jurisdictions.
  • Conduct complex technical studies to support IESO initiatives for evolving policies related to operations and evolution of the IESO-controlled grid and markets.
  • Provide team and technical leadership in complex and advanced power systems studies supporting real-time operations, operations planning, or planning activities.
  • Lead analytical and technical development of policies, operating agreements, equipment specifications, operational and outage plans, and system investments.
  • Conduct complex model validation, studies and analysis that contribute to Operating Instructions, support IESO security, adequacy and operability obligations, assess reliability impacts, develop and update models/data/security applications, and coordinate with neighboring entities.
  • Recently led complex planning studies to integrate Large Datacenters and Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) into the IESO-Controlled Grid.

Requirements

  • Completion of an engineering/applied sciences degree from an accredited university or equivalent education.
  • Requires a license to engage in the practice professional engineering in Ontario and be competent in the field of electrical engineering.
  • Advanced engineering knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, associated mathematics and computer science.
  • Knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.
  • Additional study or post-graduate degree preferred but not required.
  • Significant exposure to the overall power system operation through progressive training as an engineer in this technical field.
  • Specific experience encompassing a leadership role in the undertaking of studies and investigations in power systems.
  • Practical on-the-job training and experience completing work related to utilization of generation resources and secure operation of bulk electricity system reliability.
  • Experience with electrical engineering design concepts, analytical studies and application of computer techniques to solve power system problems.
  • Familiarity with power system operation, practices, policies, electric energy and transmission rights market operations, competitive market operations, and Market Rules.
  • A period of over 8 years (up to and including 10 years) of relevant experience is considered necessary.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and will be subject to applicable background checks.
