Senior Traction Power Engineer designing and integrating traction power systems for rail and transit projects across Canada. Leading technical efforts with a focus on safety, reliability, and sustainability.
Responsibilities
Lead the end-to-end design and delivery of AC and DC traction power systems, including substations, single-line diagrams, layouts, equipment specifications, grounding/bonding, and power distribution.
Oversee traction power engineering across rail and transit projects, coordinating closely with signaling, track, OCS, rolling stock, civil, utilities, and other disciplines to ensure fully integrated system solutions.
Review and validate designs, specifications, installation methods, testing procedures, and commissioning activities, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and TYLin’s Quality Management System.
Perform power system modeling and analysis (load flow, fault, voltage drop, reliability, EMI/EMC, stray current mitigation) to support safe and efficient system performance.
Provide technical leadership in project pursuits and delivery, including conceptual design, cost estimating, budgeting, scope development, schedules, resource planning, and technical proposal content.
Serve as a key technical interface with clients, utility providers, contractors, and stakeholders, providing expert input on requirements, contract documentation, procurement, and construction support.
Prepare and oversee engineering deliverables such as drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, and compliance documentation.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the growth of traction power technical capability within the organization.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng) licensure in Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia.
Minimum 10 years of experience in traction power systems design, construction support, consultancy, and project delivery for rail and transit systems.
Demonstrated expertise in traction power substations, power distribution, SCADA, and electrification systems for commuter rail, LRT, metro/subway, and high-speed rail projects.
Strong working knowledge of Canadian and international railway electrification standards (CSA, IEEE, and applicable global codes).
Proficiency with power system analysis and modeling tools, CAD platforms, and three-phase system studies (load flow, short circuit, fault analysis, equipment sizing).
Experience with overhead catenary, third rail, shop power, and related delivery systems.
Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with a collaborative, detail-oriented, and client-focused approach.
