Severity Unit Manager in charge of complex claims for a major insurer in the U.S. Leading a team to ensure high-quality service and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
Under general direction and as a member of the local management team, this position is responsible for product quality and performance of the Specialty severity claim team handling serious and complex commercial lines and personal liability claims.
Provide direction and technical guidance through a continuous process of management involvement and frequent claim file review and extensive litigation management.
Serve as a field representative for the Home Office Specialty product area, as requested.
Reinforce the Specialty Vision, Strategies, and Objectives through word and action.
Select, lead, mentor, performance manage and develop staff.
Leads a team of 5 to 8 MCSs and STSs who are each responsible for handling severe and/or complex claims, making the SUM ultimately responsible for an inventory with a full damage value well into the hundreds of millions.
Employ proper claim handling techniques to protect the integrity of our brand and providing consistent service quality and streamlined processes to add value for our customers.
Attract, Retain and Develop World Class Talent: Manage staff performance; implement strategies and plans to address staff development; identify and address training needs on an ongoing basis; provide frequent performance feedback.
Develop and implement strategies and initiatives to improve file quality, expense management, investigations, subrogation, structured settlement, and litigation management.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, business partners, customers, agents, regulatory agencies and others to achieve organizational goals and create better outcomes.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree.
Skilled in coverage, liability and damages analysis and has a thorough understanding of the litigation process, relevant case and statutory law and expert litigation management skills, including: Current on jurisdictional laws and regulations.
Extensive claim and/or legal experience and the technical expertise to evaluate severe and complex claims.
Thorough understanding of commercial lines products, policy language, exclusions, ISO forms, and effective claims handling practices.
Claim management experience.
High School Degree or GED.
10 years claim handling experience specifically handling serious injury and complex liability claims.
