About the role

  • Lead customs and excise governance for BAT in Warsaw, ensuring compliance and managing risks. Oversee governance framework and strategic advice across the area.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the customs and excise governance of the Area
  • Supervise customs and excise risks and disputes
  • Evaluate related financial reporting
  • Provide strategic advice across the Area
  • Ensure framework of processes, controls and governance set by Group Indirect Tax function is embedded
  • Support the Group Head of Indirect Tax to ensure alignment to the Group’s Tax Strategy & Management Guidelines
  • Ensure a framework of controls, processes and governance is enforced for compliance
  • Conduct internal review and audit of local departments on tax policies, guidelines and standards implementation
  • Support end markets with significant customs and excise audits
  • Manage and report risks in the region
  • Chair and co-ordinate bi-annual Area Indirect Tax committees
  • Drive continuous improvement regarding customs and excise management process and systems
  • Support continued professional development by keeping up to date with tax law proposals and changes
  • Deploy training to the business
  • Mentor across direct and indirect reports

Requirements

  • Excellent leadership and team member management capabilities
  • Knowledge of / experience in effective management of third-party partners in the delivery of their services (e.g. third-party customs clearing agents/brokers, logistics partners, warehousing companies, etc. who handle BAT’s excise goods)
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with tax authorities
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and keep to tight deadlines
  • Assertiveness and drive
  • Excellent project- and time-management skills
  • Ability to balance tax technical and commercial priorities
  • Degree-educated with professional accountancy/legal and/or tax qualifications
  • Minimum of seven years’ tax experience in the ‘big 4’ accounting firms, other equivalent multi-national organisations, or customs and excise authority
  • Excellent customs and excise technical and accounting knowledge, understanding of manufacturing and supply chain environments
  • Experience of international tax issues and cross-border transactions
  • Experience of dealing with tax authorities, managing tax audits and defending tax positions
  • A detailed understanding and knowledge of relevant finance tools and systems
  • Experience in Operations Finance, Supply Chain, or similar roles
  • Experience in leading material authority audits
  • Financial and tax data management, analysis, interpretation and insight generation skills
  • General knowledge of the SAP software package.
