About the role
- Genetic Counselor responsible for genetic counseling and support for patients and families dealing with genetic disorders. Collaborating on educational programs and research protocols in a healthcare setting.
Responsibilities
- Gathers family and medical history and provides counsel to patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
- Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
- Obtains informed consent and interested patients.
- Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents case and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
- Assists families and understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks.
- Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate.
- Coordinates and supports the execution of research of protocol as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
- Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
- Provides patient care/counseling to all patients of childbearing age.
Requirements
- Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC), American Board of Genetic Counseling (required)
- Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline (required)
- 2 years of experience working in a same or similar position (required)
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (preferred)
