About the role

  • Mechanical Engineer providing mechanical and equipment engineering support for Nuclear Power Plants. Preparing technical deliverables and ensuring compliance with engineering standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mechanical and equipment engineering support with the preparation of technical deliverables including but not limited to technical specifications, component specification sheets (data sheets), technical reports, vendor interface, review and technical evaluation of equipment bids, equipment purchase recommendations and all related technical activities, tender packages and engineering quotation requests, and all related activities for nuclear power plant (NPP) components and mechanical systems.
  • Perform conceptual and detail design activities including calculations for mechanical systems which include equipment arrangement/layouts as well as sizing and selection of mechanical components related to nuclear steam plants.
  • Review design documents and drawings in support of design verification.
  • Define project work scope, monitoring and reporting project progress and communicating with clients.
  • Interface with other engineering disciplines to obtain data and resolve issues relevant to design.
  • Conduct technical, conceptual and detail design meetings with peers, clients and suppliers.
  • Provide pre-order and post-order engineering support including review of client requirements, applicable documents and drawings, review of codes and standards, performing cost estimating, proposal preparation, as well as preparing and reviewing of engineering quotation requests, technical evaluations and resolving design deviations.
  • Provide technical guidance to drafting staff as well as oversight of interfacing disciplines.
  • Conduct site visits at nuclear generating stations and suppliers.
  • Evaluate the completeness and status of delivered equipment.
  • Work in accordance with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and client and company procedures.
  • Assist other engineers with daily engineering activities.

Requirements

  • Engineering degree from an accredited University in Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of working experience in the design disciplines of EPC companies or OEMs in mechanical design of industrial machines, and/or in equipment engineering with knowledge in steam and gas turbines, condensers, generators, pumps, fans, compressors, motors, valves, etc.
  • Supervisory skills with ability to guide, mentor, coach and train junior engineers
  • Experience performing work to nuclear power plants procedures and practices and qualifications for nuclear power plants engineering activities is an asset
  • Registered Professional Engineer or eligible to be registered as a Professional Engineer in a Province of Ontario, qualified to seal mechanical engineering documents
  • Certification in Rotor-dynamic or Vibration Analyses will be considered an asset
  • Solid understanding of process systems, mechanics of machines, mechanics of materials, material selection, and fundamentals of machine component design
  • Understanding and experience with the rotating equipment sizing calculations, selection, and troubleshooting of issues
  • Hands on working knowledge and design experience related to the steam and gas turbines, condensers, heat exchangers, generators, diesel and gas engines, boiler feed water pumps, condenser circulating water pumps, valves and piping, ventilation systems, as applicable to nuclear power stations
  • Historical knowledge of CANDU plant relevant equipment and components
  • Working knowledge of/experience with the CSA-N285.0, ASME Section-III and section-XI, API 610, API 612, API 613, API 614, API 616, API 617, API 670, API 686, and other nuclear-power-plant applicable standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components, pressure boundary equipment, and/or reactor systems is an asset
  • Solid knowledge of lubrication and shaft sealing system
  • Knowledge of pressure boundary work including pressure vessel design, analysis, code classification, code class boundary, non-destructive examination and design registration is an asset
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to write technical reports
  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet corporate needs
