About the role

  • Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct extensive research, and develop well-reasoned legal strategies.
  • Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients, preparing complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, petitions for reconsideration, and trial briefs.
  • Collaborate with Claims Partners to achieve optimal outcomes for Hartford insureds.
  • Provide timely and effective communication, legal advice, and support to clients, maintaining professional diplomacy in interactions with courts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel.
  • Facilitate the prompt and efficient resolution of cases and independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence in trials, hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolution proceedings.
  • Research, draft, file, and argue appellate briefs in reviewing courts.
  • Participate in team huddles, conduct in-house training for junior associates and claims partners, and engage in claims file reviews.
  • Attend continuing legal education seminars.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience handling complex Workers’ Compensation cases.
  • JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of California.
  • Trial experience is preferred.
  • Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
  • Lexis Nexis experience is a plus!
  • Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience handling complex/life pension Workers’ Compensation cases for Senior Staff Attorney candidates.
