About the role

  • Oversee the Advocacy Ambassador Program (“grasstops”) and lead expansion and engagement activities
  • Manage communication to the AFSP Volunteer Advocacy Network, including advocacy “action alert” campaigns
  • Serve as lead for development of the Access Advocacy newsletter, in consultation with policy and advocacy staff
  • Manage the Richard B. Kirchhoff Public Policy Internship Program, including recruitment, academic partnerships and performance evaluations
  • Provide team-based support for planning and execution of AFSP advocacy events
  • Assist with development and delivery of advocacy training to volunteer advocates
  • Assist with operational activities relating to AFSP’s Policy & Advocacy Office and Washington DC office operations
  • Provide relevant policy and advocacy updates to AFSP communications office for internal database and website
  • Lead correspondence received from the advocacy inbox with support from policy & advocacy staff
  • Report to the EVP & Chief Policy and Advocacy Officer and perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3 years’ experience in grassroots advocacy and/or advocacy communications and volunteer engagement (4-6 years preferred)
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Successful track record of grassroots management and development (preferred)
  • Experience writing advocacy communications
  • Familiarity with health, mental health or suicide prevention issues (a plus)
  • Experience/interest in recruitment/supervision of interns (required)
  • Social media and digital content skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Google Drive
  • Experience with grassroots and advocacy management software (Quorum highly preferred)
  • Efficiency in virtual events and meeting platforms
  • Ability to work a full-time schedule
  • Ability to travel as needed to attend work meetings or events
  • Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds occasionally
