About the role

• Principal Cardiothoracic Donor Procurement Surgeon organizing organ procurement surgeries and collaborating with transplant programs. Driving the clinical quality in donor organ retrieval and assessment processes.

Responsibilities

• Perform all aspects of donor heart and lung procurement surgery including clinical assessment of donor organs (conduct bronchoscopy, as needed for diagnostic and treatment purposes)
• Surgical donor organ retrieval and OCS instrumentation procedures to the highest level of clinical quality and according to TransMedics protocol/training standards at transplant centers across the US
• Travel to donor/recipient sites as needed and/or may be assigned to coverage in various locations for a few weeks at a time
• Maintain the highest standards of professional and communication standards to maximize confidence and avoid any negative perceptions in the OR environment or with accepting transplant surgeons
• Participate in developing OCS surgical retrieval, donor organ management and assessment, and communication protocols for both OCS Heart and OCS Lung procurements
• Assist in training and mentoring the OCS Cardiothoracic surgical retrieval team members across the US, including proctoring donor retrieval runs with junior surgeons, if needed
• Communicate as needed with transplant programs’ accepting transplant surgeon to provide a surgical assessment view to facilitate clinical decisions on accepting or declining a donor offer
• Communicate with TMDX clinical staff on the status of the organ to facilitate the allocation process
• Perform other TransMedics tasks and duties as required

Requirements

• MD degree or equivalent with at least 5+ years’ experience conducting deceased cardiothoracic (lung and heart) donor organ procurement and assessments and/or advanced cardiothoracic surgical procedures
• Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
• Able to work independently and collaboratively and build rapport with internal and external contacts
• Ability to work calmly and professionally under pressure
• Highly flexible and adaptable
• Proficiency with electronic messaging platforms and MS Office Suite
