About the role
- Head of Accounting responsible for scaling accounting and compliance for Nelly's fintech products. Leading a strong team and partnering with senior leadership to drive financial insights and decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow our accounting team as we scale our fintech product offering, managing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department and the professional development of team members.
- Act as a strategic partner to senior management by providing financial insights and recommendations to support business growth and decision-making.
- Design and implement accounting standards (HGB, RechKredV) crucial for our transition to a BaFin-regulated entity, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Establish and maintain robust Internal Control Systems (ICS) and accounting policies that align with German and international regulatory and banking requirements.
- Oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements, ensuring timely and accurate submission.
- Manage and coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors, serving as the primary point of contact.
- Set up and improve accounting processes for our fintech products (e.g., factoring, payment processing, and more), ensuring accurate revenue recognition and asset valuation.
- Serve as the accounting and regulatory reporting expert for internal and external stakeholders such as banks, auditors, and authorities (e.g., BaFin, Deutsche Bundesbank).
Requirements
- 5+ years' experience in complex accounting and financial reporting, ideally within financial services (Big Four) or a high-growth fintech, handling complex financial structures and reporting requirements.
- Exceptional analytical and solution-oriented mindset — you have a deep understanding of complex financial systems and proactively challenge the status quo to drive meaningful process and reporting improvements in financial operations and controls.
- Advanced, expert-level proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., DATEV) and financial reporting software, as well as strong skills in Excel and Google Sheets (advanced functions, pivot tables, data visualization).
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant accounting standards (e.g., IFRS/GAAP), complex consolidations, and the design and operation of robust internal controls (ICS).
- Fluent in German and English (written and spoken) with excellent communication skills.
- Ability to clearly explain complex financial concepts, present analysis results, and collaborate effectively with all relevant stakeholders.
