About the role

  • Technical Manager leading HV transmission line engineering projects for Fisher Associates, guiding teams through design, compliance, and construction phases.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as senior technical authority (SME) for HV/EHV transmission line engineering projects.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to define client requirements, deliver designs, and provide technical guidance throughout project execution.
  • Establish and enforce transmission line design criteria aligned with utility standards, industry codes, and client specifications.
  • Develop and review overhead transmission line and structure models using PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.
  • Prepare and review engineering drawings, specifications, and procurement documents for tubular steel poles, lattice towers, and transmission line hardware.
  • Review vendor calculations and drawings for compliance with design criteria, codes, and contract requirements.
  • Develop and review complete transmission line construction packages, including plan & profile drawings, staking sheets, stringing tables, BOMs, structure details, phasing plans, foundation drawings, and installation specifications.
  • Lead design QA/QC and redline reviews, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret and apply NESC, IEEE, ASCE, RUS, and utility-specific standards, providing technical direction to project teams.
  • Maintain accountability for technical accuracy, quantities, and compliance across all deliverables.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and designers, overseeing drawing production and technical growth.
  • Develop scopes of work, technical specifications, and phased design packages (30%, 60%, IFC) for HV and EHV transmission line projects.
  • Perform and review line design calculations, including structure loading, conductor selection, sag/tension, clearance analysis, insulation coordination, and grounding.
  • Support proposal development by preparing engineering scopes, cost estimates, and technical assumptions for multi-discipline RFPs.
  • Conduct routing studies, optimization analyses, and constructability reviews to improve cost, schedule, and performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement, integrating new tools, technologies, and design methodologies.
  • Support construction and field engineering, including site visits, issue resolution, and participation in build-out and energization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • 15+ years of progressive engineering design experience in utility power and renewable energy.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Advanced proficiency with PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER for overhead transmission line design.
  • Strong expertise in HV and EHV transmission systems.
  • Experience supporting utilities, EPC firms, and renewable energy projects (wind, solar, and infrastructure).
  • Working knowledge of distribution system design preferred.
  • Familiarity with MFAD, LPILE, and geotechnical application for transmission structure foundations.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry and client standards (NESC, ASCE, IEEE, RUS, NEC, NFPA, NERC).
  • Proven leadership of engineering teams and management of complex projects from concept through construction.
  • Prior people-management experience, including performance reviews and resource planning, preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering tools such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
