About the role

Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and submission of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, translating Fika's research findings into high-quality academic publications
- Identify publication opportunities that align with Fika's research agenda and strategic priorities
- Manage the full publication lifecycle, from manuscript development through peer review and final publication
- Ensure all publications meet the highest standards of academic rigor while remaining accessible to practitioner audiences
- Maintain Fika's publication pipeline and track citations and impact of published work
- Present research findings at academic conferences and sector convenings to elevate Fika's profile as a thought leader
- Cultivate and manage relationships with academic institutions, research centers, and individual researchers in Fika's program countries (Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and emerging geographies)
- Identify and recruit subject-matter experts to advance Fika's research priorities in areas such as transportation economics, infrastructure planning, gender equity, climate resilience, and poverty alleviation
- Support external research partners by providing organizational context, facilitating data access, coordinating with field teams, and ensuring ethical compliance
- Serve as the primary liaison between external researchers and Fika staff, translating between academic and practitioner frameworks
- Negotiate research agreements and memoranda of understanding with partner institutions
- Build research capacity in service of Fika’s research agenda within universities and institutions in program countries, supporting the development of homegrown expertise in rural access research
- Work with the Chief Impact Officer to develop and refine Fika's multi-year research agenda
- Collaborate with the End-User Voice & Experience Working Group to ensure research questions and methods center community perspectives and priorities
- Coordinate with the Regional Impact and Evidence Manager to align research activities with program evaluation needs
- Support country teams in identifying research opportunities that emerge from program implementation
- Provide strategic input on research design for both internal studies and external partnerships
- Monitor trends in development research and identify opportunities for Fika to contribute to important academic and policy debates
Requirements
- Demonstrated track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed academic journals
- Experience designing and implementing rigorous impact evaluations or research studies, preferably in international development contexts
- Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills, including experience with statistical software (Stata, R, Python, or similar)
- Experience managing relationships with academic institutions or research partners
- Excellent academic writing skills and ability to translate complex research for diverse audiences
- Familiarity with ethical research practices and IRB processes
- Experience working in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (preferred)
- Ability to work effectively within a diverse global team and bridge academic and practitioner communities
- Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple research workstreams simultaneously
- Demonstrated commitment to ethical research practices that respect and elevate community voice
- Fluency in English required; proficiency in Amharic, Bemba, French, Kinyarwanda, Luganda, Swahili, or other languages spoken in Fika program countries is a plus
