About the role
- Entry-Level Mechanical Engineer supporting HVAC design at IKM Building Solutions in Wisconsin. Assisting with HVAC system layouts, drawings, and collaborating with internal teams.
Responsibilities
- Assist with creating HVAC system designs, including drawings, specifications, and system narratives.
- Design heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning layouts using CAD software.
- Perform basic heat gain/loss calculations for residential and commercial projects.
- Support internal design, construction, and service teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
- Help prepare designs for negotiated and Design/Build projects.
- Assist with conceptual cost estimates for a wide range of HVAC systems.
- Participate in QA/QC processes to ensure design quality.
- Review and interpret architectural drawings and 3D models to support design decisions.
- Support project scheduling, manpower planning, and budget development.
- Assist with construction administration, including field visits and investigations.
- Help process Submittals, RFIs, Change Orders, Bulletins, and Record Drawings.
- Recommend product improvements or cost-saving opportunities when identified.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to maintain consistent design standards.
- Attend department meetings and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
- Basic knowledge of HVAC principles and system applications
- Familiarity with building codes (preferred)
- Exposure to reading architectural drawings and/or 3D models (coursework accepted)
- Interest in LEED principles related to HVAC design (preferred)
- Ability to pursue a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the future (PE not required for entry-level)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Exposure to AutoCAD MEP and/or energy modeling software (Trane Trace, Carrier HAP) a plus
- Strong organizational and project-execution skills
