About the role

  • Senior Staff Attorney at AVP providing legal representation primarily in immigration law. Engaging with diverse communities and advocating for LGBTQ and HIV-affected individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal consultations and provide referrals or advice as appropriate
  • Provide full legal representation in Immigration matters
  • Prepare all aspects of clients’ cases, including legal research and court appearances
  • Provide trainings and outreach to community members and other professionals
  • Mentor and supervise pro bono volunteer attorneys
  • Attend weekly supervision and Legal Department meetings
  • Participate in AVP’s Anti-Oppression work and events

Requirements

  • Legal license to practice law in the State of New York
  • Admission to the bar of any jurisdiction and engaged in the practice of law
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience
  • Experience working with low-income, diverse communities, especially LGBTQ individuals and survivors of violence
  • Expertise in providing legal services that benefit the public interest
  • Supervision experience preferred
  • Fluency or strong proficiency in Spanish or another language preferred
  • Commitment to social justice and advancing anti-racism and anti-oppression
