About the role

  • Senior Software Engineer in Toronto working on rebuilding legacy applications using Visual Basic and C++. Collaborating with global teams on high-performance software solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Craft client code that is not just efficient but also performant, testable, scalable, secure, and of the highest quality.
  • Provide accurate status tracking, reporting, and estimation using project methods and tools.
  • Gather requirements, validate their understanding amongst the team, and create and maintain relevant documentation.
  • Execute activities within the current methodology and uphold the highest quality standards.
  • Foster collaboration with fellow engineers, designers, and managers to comprehend user pain points and iterate on solutions that drive client success.
  • Take ownership of projects, from technical design to a successful launch.

Requirements

  • Need someone who knows Visual Basic or C++ programming to rebuild in a more modern language. It is not a web application. Looking for someone who understands and has previous experience in low-level languages who can either rebuild the application or redocument it so that it can be rebuilt.
  • Compile a legacy app that is in Visual Basic, and decompile it in assembler, then rebuild that assembler back into a modern language.
  • Demonstrated expertise with at least 5+ years of experience in one specified technology.
  • Professional background in Systems Engineering.
  • Proficiency in modern C++ development for high-performance applications.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and integrating with RESTful APIs.
  • Expert-level skills in reverse engineering, including software disassembly, protocol analysis, and the use of decompilers for EXE files.
  • Proven ability to work with legacy systems, specifically Visual Basic 6.0 (VB6), including DLLs and OCX controls.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining event automation systems.
  • Strong understanding of Ethernet communication protocols and networking principles.
  • Experience in engineering software systems of medium-to-large scope and complexity.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Experience in building frontend/backend applications at scale.
  • Proficiency in the English language.
  • Additional Experience Desired:
  • Experience with industrial fieldbus protocols such as Profibus or Interbus is a significant plus.
  • Familiarity with serial communication protocols like RS-232.
  • Knowledge of source control tools.
  • Understanding of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Proficiency in Object-Oriented Programming (inheritance, polymorphism, classes, instances, properties).
  • Knowledge of protocols like HTTP, and serialization formats like JSON and XML.
  • Knowledge of document databases.
  • Experience with Unit testing.
