About the role

  • Power System Engineer responsible for Electro-magnetic Transient Studies and support in power generation and distribution systems. Joining the team in a hybrid role within DNV's Canada office.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Electro-magnetic Transient (EMT) Studies such as sub synchronous resonance (SSR), control interaction (SSCI), ferro-resonance, temporary overvoltage (TOV), switching overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), harmonic, energization etc.
  • Develop/tune PSCAD models, perform PSCAD/PSSE model benchmarking analysis
  • Produce and/or review technical reports and presentations for external Customers
  • Timely completion of projects assigned while meeting project quality and project budget
  • Stay up to date with relevant industry standards such as IEEE, NERC, CIGRE
  • Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations
  • Contribute to the team’s research and innovative activities in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to enhance team’s performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements
  • Cultivate customer relationships, technical advisory support for generations, and large load interconnections connecting to transmission system

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering with emphasis in Power System and Control
  • Hands-on experience with PSCAD software
  • Knowledge of inverter-based resources (Wind, Solar, Battery Storage) and associated control
  • In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small-signal and large-signal control stability
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills (The employee would be required to draft and review internal documents in English to be used throughout North America)
  • Active PE License (Preferred)
  • Doctorate degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems (Preferred)
  • Hands on experience performing EMT, SSR studies (Preferred)
  • Experience in scripting languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) for automation and data analysis (Preferred)
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including PSS/E, DigSilent Power Factory, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of other Electricity Markets (such as PJM, MISO, NYISO, ISONE) planning & interconnection practices (Preferred)
