About the role
- (Sr./Lead) Engineer I (II) performing market-related functions to support PJM System Operators for efficient market operations. Roles include compliance, analysis, coordination, and customer training for power system operations.
Responsibilities
- Support power system reliability by ensuring operations are in compliance with applicable NERC standards and PJM operating and emergency procedures.
- Responsible for performing analysis evaluating the effectiveness of PJM operations and the efficiency of PJM markets.
- Coordinate and follow-up on issues affecting PJM operations, PJM markets and market-to-market coordination with neighboring RTO/ISOs.
- Ability to manage effective operations of the Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED), Ancillary Service Optimizer (ASO), Dispatch Management Tool (DMT), and User Experience and Visualization (UE&V) applications.
- Ability to understand the operational and technical aspects of PJM’s Markets including Day-Ahead Market, Real-Time Locational Marginal Price calculation, Ancillary Services Market, and Shortage Pricing.
- Ability to evaluate data related to power system operations and perform what-if analysis to improve overall system operations.
- Ability to provide customer support and training.
- Ability to work with other members of the System Operations Division, Market Services Division, and ITS Division in problem-solving and streamlining processes.
- Provide detailed analytical evaluations and act as a problem solver, proactively addressing business needs and requirements with innovative, creative, and cost-effective solutions.
- Provide support for documenting, designing, and testing enhancements to applications and reports supported by Markets Coordination.
- Work with the System Operator Training Department to design training programs on using market tools and understanding the market implication of dispatcher actions, and the impacts of new market rules.
- Work confidently with the dispatching staff to achieve operation and market excellence.
- Support PJM's 24x7 operations, may be required to provide off-hour control room support during special system operating conditions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent work experience
- At least 8 years of work experience
- Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
- Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
- Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
- Ability to visualize and solve complex problems
- Ability to apply analytical and mathematical solutions
- Experience with the Analytical Process including data collection and organization
- Ability to solve problems that proactively address customer needs and requirements with innovative, creative, and cost-effective solutions
- Experience with DBMS concepts (including SQL queries, tables, views, DB links, etc.)
- Master's Degree, Engineering (Preferred)
- At least 4 years of experience PJM Markets or PJM Operations (Preferred)
- At least 4 years of experience SQL (Preferred)
- Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions (Preferred)
- Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program) (Preferred)
