• Design and build identity & session systems
• Implement auth flows, device registration, key management integrations, token/session lifecycle, and account recovery patterns.
• Support multi-device identity and secure device-to-account bindings.
• Ship sync and encrypted state primitives
• Build APIs and services that enable state sync across devices (event-based or state-based replication).
• Partner with client engineers to support end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) state where the server coordinates without needing plaintext access.
• Implement lightweight cloud coordination
• Create “coordination services,” not “big backend”: rendezvous, discovery, sequencing, fan-out, rate-limits, abuse controls, and reliability tooling.
• Prefer minimal durable state and clear boundaries; push logic to the edge/client when appropriate.
• Build real-time messaging, presence, and group chat capabilities
• Implement reliable messaging pipelines (delivery semantics, retries, ordering strategies, idempotency).
• Support presence and group membership (joins/leaves, device fan-out, read receipts/typing signals as needed).
• Integrate with pub/sub or streaming systems, and tune for latency.
• Edge-aware systems thinking
• Design for intermittent connectivity, offline-first behavior, device constraints, and high tail-latency networks.
• Make trade-offs explicit: consistency vs availability, ordering vs throughput, durability vs cost.
• Operate what you build
• Add observability (metrics, tracing, structured logging), define SLOs, and participate in on-call/incident response (lightweight rotation).

• iOS technical leadership: Define architecture, engineering standards, and delivery practices for a high-quality iOS codebase.
• Build best-in-class Swift/SwiftUI experiences: Create polished, responsive UI with strong state management, clean composition, and modular design.
• Performance & animation excellence: Ensure buttery-smooth interactions (scrolling, transitions, gestures), optimize render pipelines, and aggressively reduce jank, dropped frames, and memory pressure. Obsess about the animation and performance.
• On-device inference optimization: Implement and optimize ML inference pipelines with a focus on latency, battery, thermal limits, memory usage, and throughput.
• CoreML / MLX integration: Build reliable inference flows using CoreML and modern ML stacks (including MLX where appropriate), managing model formats, quantization strategies, and runtime constraints.
• Metal-enabled acceleration: Use Metal (and related GPU tooling) to accelerate graphics or computation where it meaningfully improves user experience and performance.
• Offline-first architectures: Design robust offline flows with local persistence, sync strategies, conflict resolution, and resilient background behavior.
• Observability & quality: Establish performance monitoring, crash/error reporting, regression testing, and release processes that keep quality high as the product scales.
• Cross-functional collaboration: Partner closely with product, design, and backend to translate goals into crisp technical plans and deliver reliably.
• Mentor and raise the bar: Coach iOS engineers through pairing, code reviews, and thoughtful guidance; drive a culture of craftsmanship and velocity.

Lead iOS Engineer

• Own end-to-end features across the iOS app, including:
- Chat experiences (composer, streaming updates, attachments, latency-sensitive UI)
- Memory and personalization flows (capture, edit, display, privacy-minded UX)
- Conversation experiences (threading, search, navigation, state restoration)
- Group experiences (shared contexts, multi-user UX patterns, real-time-ish interactions)
• Build high-fidelity Swift/SwiftUI UI with clean architecture, strong state management, and thoughtful component design.
• Work tightly with design to implement nuanced interaction details—gestures, transitions, micro-animations, haptics, while still preserving performance.
• Be performance-obsessed: profile and optimize frame rate, startup time, memory usage, and network/UI concurrency; eliminate stutters and regressions.
• Contribute to offline-first reliability: design resilient local persistence, caching, and sync behaviors so core experiences work under poor connectivity.
• Support on-device ML experiences (as needed): integrate CoreML/MLX-driven features and help optimize inference pipelines for latency, battery, and thermal constraints.
• Ship with quality: write tests where valuable, set guardrails against regressions, and partner with QA/release stakeholders to ensure stable releases.
• Collaborate cross-functionally: work with product and backend partners to scope, de-risk, and deliver features; communicate tradeoffs and options clearly.

• Convert, optimize, and deploy models to run efficiently on-device using Core ML and/or MLX.
• Implement quantization strategies (e.g., 8-bit / 4-bit where applicable), compression, pruning, distillation, and other techniques to meet performance targets.
• Profile and improve model execution across compute backends (CPU/GPU/Neural Engine where relevant), and reduce memory footprint.
• Local RAG + memory systems
• Build and optimize local retrieval pipelines (embeddings, indexing, caching, ranking) that work offline and under tight resource constraints.
• Implement local memory systems (short/long-term) with careful attention to privacy, durability, and performance.
