About the role

  • Underwriter providing insurance and surety solutions for the Construction Services team. Managing complex risk, profitability, and relationships with clients and agents.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of an assigned book of business primarily comprised of accounts with the highest complexity.
  • Underwrite and skillfully negotiate the most complex, at-risk, or hard-to-close deals to minimize risk and maximize profitability.
  • Partner with MD to execute business unit underwriting strategies across your team’s book of business to achieve profit and growth objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with internal partners within the business unit and across the enterprise to identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with external partners by regularly meeting in person with agents and brokers to market and sell Travelers products with a goal of writing and retaining accounts consistent with our risk appetite.
  • Identify and capture new business opportunities using consultative marketing and sales skills.
  • Develop and execute individual agency sales plans that align with region/group sales plans to drive team success.
  • Consult with Managing Director (MD) to support region/group sales plans.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and strategic counsel on underwriting to all levels of underwriters within region or business unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Eight to ten years of applicable underwriting experience.
  • Expert level knowledge of products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance and surety markets.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to underwrite, market products, identify financial challenges, and analyze available information to make decisions in alignment with our risk appetite.
  • Ability to execute strategic direction across assigned territory in partnership with leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to successfully negotiate in difficult situations with agents and brokers.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring others.
  • Five years of underwriting experience.
