About the role

  • Intern working with the engineering team at Southwire on cable teardowns to analyze material composition. Engaging in projects impacting cable manufacturing processes and collaborating with experienced professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.
  • You will also collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational leaders, many of whom began as interns and co-ops themselves.
  • You will be provided a robust developmental experience through an immersive onboarding and offboarding experience, assigned a mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and community service /volunteer initiatives.

  • This intern will work with the engineering team in the Huntersville plant. This project involves performing detailed teardowns of the cables we manufacture. The goal is to determine the material composition required to produce 1,000 feet of cable, with a particular focus on neutral wire consumption.
  • Conducting cable teardowns to document constituent material usage.
  • Analyzing the amount of pull‑down on neutral wires as they move through the plant.
  • Studying wire draw processes and measuring wire size as it exits the draw machine.
  • Performing hands‑on physical work, including measurement and data collection.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.
