About the role

  • Oversee PSS’s adult education initiatives and external communications for New York City’s older adults. Collaborate with staff and community partners to improve educational offerings and program impact.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the Director of Communications, oversee the overall program, and lead efforts to continually enhance its effectiveness and impact.
  • Strategize, develop and implement initiatives to build the agency’s brand and program recognition amongst potential clients and targeted communities.
  • Promote the agency and all of its programs by developing staff capacity to perform outreach, build community partnerships, participate in community events, and represent the agency to the public.
  • Assure the continuous promotion of PSS and its programs by guiding the creation of social media, press releases, media, etc.
  • Develop and maintain liaisons with other organizations, as appropriate, to collaborate in outreach efforts or other partnership opportunities.
  • Stay abreast of new tools and opportunities, know how to use digital tools to create programming in an efficient manner while ensuring a high standard of quality and accuracy.
  • Supervise the Director of PSS Life! University, oversee the overall program and lead efforts to promote, expand and improve its in-person and online offerings.
  • Work with other organizations and partners to provide informative or educational content to our participants.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments and best practices in adult education delivery and ensure these best practices are incorporated in Life U.
  • Work with all department heads to help improve the quality of their Life U offerings using best practices.
  • Stay current with topics of interest to the older adult audience.
  • Cultivate and continually identify new content partners to offer engaging educational programming (courses and articles) on these topics.
  • Work with senior leadership and your teams to set strategic and annual goals and objectives.
  • Coach and supervise the program staff in achieving deliverables and objectives.
  • Provide direction and supervision to staff working with volunteer instructors.
  • Demonstrate leadership, lead team meetings, and ensure the effective supervision of any relevant staff, interns, and volunteers - including completion of performance reviews, performance coaching, and staff professional development.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with PSS contractors, vendors, and partners.
  • Responsible for all relevant contracts and agreement negotiations and fulfillment of obligations.
  • Monitor the Communications and PSS Life! University contract deliverables and budgets, including oversight for the timely and accurate ordering of services and supplies as needed.
  • Submit required metrics and reports in a complete and timely fashion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in communications and/or adult education
  • Strong and effective communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Deep familiarity with adult learning theory and best practices
  • Skill at crafting effective messaging and content that feels relevant, accessible, and inclusive to diverse audiences
  • Experience supervising a team and working across departments to accomplish goals
  • Experience creating trackable curriculum and training materials
  • Good graphic design and usability sense and/or experience working with a designer
  • At least 3 years of demonstrated experience working with older adults (age 50+) in an educational setting preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills must be proficient with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams
  • Experience working with CRM databases (i.e. Salesforce) is a plus
  • Experience developing corporate training and workshops is a plus.
