About the role

  • Habeas Project Coordinator at NMILC coordinating immigration relief for detained individuals. Ensure efficient case management, documentation, and collaboration with pro bono legal partners.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process referrals from partner organizations; obtain additional information and help assess viable habeas cases for the NM Habeas Project.
  • Collect, organize, and maintain materials such as templates, training guides, sample filings, and practice advisories related to habeas petitions.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date records of referrals, case assignments, and pro bono attorney placements.
  • Assist with recruiting, training, and retaining pro bono attorneys for the Habeas Project.
  • Assign habeas cases to pro bono attorneys, monitor case progress, and maintain communication throughout the case’s duration.
  • Increase capacity for conducting both remote and in-person intakes for detained individuals, including coordination of cases suitable for pro bono representation.
  • Strengthen referral networks by coordinating case referrals with other organizations (e.g., Immigrant Justice Corps, ACLU-NM).
  • Provide administrative and logistical support to NMILC staff attorneys representing detained clients.
  • Participate in rapid-response and community legal clinics during times of increased enforcement activity, offering Know Your Rights (KYR) information and orientation for families of detained individuals.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant immigration and post-conviction procedures; support continuous improvement of project systems and training materials.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field (e.g., political science, criminal justice, social work, or legal studies).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Experience working with diverse communities, including immigrants or detained populations, preferred.
  • Prior experience coordinating pro bono or volunteer programs is a plus.
  • Commitment to social justice, immigrant rights, and collaborative teamwork.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Willingness to pursue DOJ accreditation if program needs require it.
