About the role

  • Assistant Attorney General in Gun Violence Prevention Unit enforcing Massachusetts gun safety laws and supporting compliance efforts. Involves litigation, investigations, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Attorney General will work closely with the GVPU Director to advance the Unit’s mission, with a primary focus on enforcement-related investigations and litigation
  • Screening and developing new matters aligned with GVPU enforcement priorities
  • Investigating potential violations of Massachusetts gun laws and related consumer protection or regulatory provisions
  • Building litigation-ready factual records and coordinating evidence-gathering with law enforcement and agency partners
  • Drafting and litigating enforcement matters in state and federal court, including pleadings, motions, discovery, and hearings/trial preparation
  • Negotiating and enforcing settlements and other compliance resolutions, as appropriate
  • Coordinating with internal AGO teams and external partners (including law enforcement agencies, District Attorneys, and relevant state agencies) to advance GVPU enforcement efforts
  • Supporting cross-state and multi-party matters, including multi-state investigations or coordinated actions with other Attorneys General, as appropriate
  • Supporting legislative and policy initiatives, including legal research, analysis, and drafting
  • Engaging with community stakeholders as needed, including through developing and implementing communications strategies

Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar or eligible for admission in short order
  • A minimum of six (6) years of full-time legal experience, including complex investigations and litigation experience, preferred
  • Civil enforcement experience is required; experience with criminal and/or regulatory enforcement is considered a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to develop factual records and translate investigations into enforcement outcomes, including litigation or negotiated resolutions
  • Experience working collaboratively with government partners, including law enforcement and regulatory agencies, is strongly preferred
  • Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including other attorneys and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Applicants must be Massachusetts Bar eligible at the time of application and must apply for admission before their start date
  • Candidates who are not yet admitted may be hired as ‘Counsel’ and must pass the Massachusetts Bar within one year of their start date
