About the role

  • Electrical Services Technician overseeing inspection and maintenance of traffic signals and lighting systems in Illinois. Ensuring efficient operation and compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors all traffic signals, flashing beacons, highway lighting, and other electrical equipment located on state rights-of-way in the district to ensure proper and efficient operation.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and inspects electrical work on traffic signals, flashing beacons, highway lighting, and other electrical equipment maintained by the state performed by electrical contractors for construction projects, the district’s electrical maintenance contract, or local municipalities.
  • Assists local agencies in complex repairs of traffic signals that are on state routes but the maintenance responsibility of the local agency.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in electronic equipment relating to traffic control devices, intelligent transportation system (ITS) components, and highway lighting.
  • Documents all emergency repairs and scheduled routine maintenance activities performed.
  • Performs proper corrective repairs for emergency calls on all electronic devices.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on traffic signal and highway lighting controllers.
  • Develops and implements various traffic signal timing programs.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job related technical/science curriculum, PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic, electrical, and mechanical traffic control devices and systems.
  • Experience with components and parts of electronic and electrical devices used in highway lighting, pump systems, and traffic control.
  • Experience with use of laptop computer and/or tablet to interface with traffic signal equipment programs and video or radar detection programming.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, electrical drawings, timing sheets and manuals.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and asset management applications.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules, regulations, and practices required in electrical and electronic work.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Districtwide travel.
  • 24/7 call availability.
