About the role

  • Evaluating and controlling radioactive waste management programs at Newport News Shipbuilding. Ensuring compliance with radiation protection regulations and assisting in development of safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, implements, and controls companys radioactive waste management programs and procedures to protect against radiation hazards.
  • Recommends and develops policies for inspection standards, decontamination procedures, emergency procedures, waste handling, and disposal services.
  • Controls personnel radiation exposures, environmental releases, and surface-type contaminants.
  • Stays abreast of federal, state, local, and industry radiation protection regulations and ensures that radiation levels are in compliance with standards.
  • May develop and direct radiation training and monitoring programs.
  • Assists RSO Manager in the development of policies for safely utilizing a radiography source onboard commissioned Navy vessels and training facilities, within temporary area operations, in permanent radiography areas and during emergency situations involving an irretrievable (hung-out) source.
  • Assists in the development of policies for inspection standards, emergency procedures, and standard operating procedures.
  • Assists RSO Manager in the control and management of personnel radiation exposures.
  • Coordinates shipping and receiving radioactive materials within DOT/NRC regulations.
  • Maintains all associated radiography equipment and calibration.
  • Monitors and controls exposure to personnel and the environment.
  • Stays abreast of NRC and Virginia Radiation Health Department regulations and ensures that radiation levels and personnel exposures are in compliance with standards.
  • Assists RSO Manager in the development and administration of O38 radiation safety training and safety monitoring programs.

Requirements

  • Must Have Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.
  • One of the following may be used as an equivalent to Bachelor's Degree: NNS Apprentice School graduate
  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
  • Associate's Degree or other formal 2 year program and 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of relevant non-exempt experience.
  • Military Paygrade E-5 or above military experience
  • High School/GED and 4 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant exempt experience.
  • High School/GED and 8 years combined of Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience or other relevant non-exempt experience.
  • Radiography experience is preferred for this position. This position requires the candidate to be able to obtain IRRSP, a 3rd party certification and must be able to pass a RAD Physical.
