About the role

  • Research Engineer/Specialist at GKN Aerospace working on digital engineering and simulation. Involved in research and development, technology planning, and technical documentation for aerospace innovations.

Responsibilities

  • Draw on, and develop specialist knowledge to deliver focused research and development in TRL1-6 range and in demonstrator and insertion projects.
  • Use and develop knowledge of strategic products and technologies.
  • Discuss and develop complex technical principles and concepts as part of a broader technical team.
  • Support planning of technical work.
  • Contribute to Technology Development Plans and Technology Business Cases related to specialization field.
  • Demonstrate commitment to innovation and technical quality in specialization field - leading to high quality Technology Readiness Level gates, Notional Type Designs and/or Design Reviews.
  • Support any necessary 'hands on' development test work and development trials.
  • Originate and issue high quality and detailed technical documentation.
  • Review technical reports and supervise interns and master thesis students when required.
  • Support on-boarding of new employees in area of specialization.
  • Drive maturity of technologies in specialist field and undertake technical problem solving in specialist field, including support with operational issues from time to time.
  • Develop and maintain long-term ecosystem relationships in specialist field for the benefit of the projects, aligned with company strategy and direction from Chief Technologist(s).
  • Ensure adherence to environmental health and safety (EHS) policies and procedures for activities, and contribute to a proactive EHS culture in the wider team.
  • Contribute to the development of GKN as a 'Great Place to Work', aligned with the core principles - safe, innovative, open & honest, care & respect, and ownership.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or aerospace related field, with 5+ years of experience
  • Experience in finite element simulation methods and techniques.
  • Experience in FE modelling of assemblies, subassemblies & components.
  • Experience in stress analysis and fatigue analysis.
  • Good knowledge of FEA commercial tools, preferably ANSYS Mechanical (APDL) & ANSYS Workbench.
  • General engineering knowledge of metallic and composite materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in python programming.
  • Experience in concept development, evaluation & selection for new product & technology development, knowledge of TRL-scale
  • Experience in hardware demonstrator development for new products with testing requirements and general understanding of manufacturing process.
