About the role

  • Associate Utility Designer responsible for designing Substation projects in Connecticut's Electrical Design team. Engaging in engineering designs, field visits, and collaborating with construction personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed engineering designs using computer-aided techniques.
  • Develop final detailed design packages for projects through discussions and meetings with appropriate engineering & construction personnel, design disciplines, and outside vendors.
  • Prepare conceptual designs and sketches based on field investigations, project scope, and engineering criteria supplied by project/discipline engineers.
  • Perform field visits during the design process to verify site conditions, resolve field issues and verify the accuracy of the design.
  • Provide guidance, training, and direction to design drafters in the development of finished drawings.
  • Perform technical calculations for substation designs.
  • Prepare, approve, and maintain bills of materials and other supporting documents associated with the design drawing development.
  • Process, review, and approve design changes to accommodate field-related problems and verify the "as-built" conditions of design documents.
  • Assist in the development of department standards in accordance with utility industry.
  • Review and approve vendor projects.
  • Provide design input to engineers for project development.
  • Provide support for additional equipment, materials, or services in connection with construction.
  • Provide design services to Engineering upon requests to aid them in the preparation of federal, state, and local license submittals.
  • Required to perform Storm duty assignments.

Requirements

  • Must have working knowledge of electrical systems: experience in wiring, working knowledge of one-line, three-lines, and schematics.
  • Prefer working knowledge of AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Ability to apply department design/drafting standards and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Effectively communicate ideas and directions, both written and orally.
  • Demonstrate ability to apply basic electrical theory, technical mathematics, and basic science.
  • Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Zero (0) two (2) years of directly related utility design, wiring or technical experience preferred.
  • Individual must hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
