About the role

  • Senior Technical Advisor guiding conservation efforts and managing island biodiversity in New Zealand. Leading strategic projects to safeguard species and restore ecosystems across the country.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice, and training in island management and threat mitigation
  • Lead development of tools, systems, and processes to enable effective biodiversity outcomes on islands
  • Translate complex science into practical solutions and communicate advice clearly to diverse audiences
  • Build technical capability within DOC and across partners
  • Represent DOC in cross-agency initiatives and maintain strong stakeholder relationships
  • Work as an honourable treaty partner and promote Māori engagement and involvement in your work

Requirements

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Sound analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Recognised expertise in biodiversity conservation and technical programme design
  • A graduate or post-graduate qualification in biological sciences
  • Ability to lead complex projects and deliver results on time and within budget
  • Practical experience in an island environment
  • Self-awareness, pragmatism and agility to adapt as the role requirements evolve
  • Understanding or willingness to learn Māori tikanga and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it relates to your work
  • Familiarity with national and international best practice in biodiversity management
