Temporary IP Paralegal managing a global trademark portfolio for Brooks. Collaborating with in-house and outside counsel on trademark strategy and business objectives.
Responsibilities
Execute company trademark strategy in cooperation with in-house counsel and direct outside counsel on various global trademark actions including applications, renewals, oppositions, non-use cancellations and appeals
Oversee the trademark clearance process for new product names, technology names, and certain marketing assets, conducting in-house trademark research and working with outside counsel as needed, communicating results to attorney and/or clients
Collaborate with the business and outside counsel to review, grant and manage trademark customs recordals, tracking deadlines and preparing materials for filing and/or for outside counsel
Assist attorney with managing, drafting, and filing trademark oppositions, cancellations, and conflict matters (e.g., cease and desist letters)
Manage, track, oversee, and produce evidence of use as needed to maintain global trademarks or for the purpose of opposition, cancellations and/or responding to office actions
In partnership with counsel, manage certain trademark conflicts, negotiate resolutions, and communicate with opposing counsel
Own frontline watch notice (and other third-party conflict), reviewing and making recommendations to counsel about the next steps, directing outside counsel according to business goals and in-house counsel advice
Coordinate with and support in-house counsel in fighting counterfeits
Support marketing by reviewing certain marketing assets, as needed, and conducting risk assessments, aligning attorneys on risk tolerance
Draft terms and conditions for sales promotions and support attorneys in drafting longer form terms and conditions for contests and sweepstakes
Research and review products and packaging for trademark, design, and copyright issues on an ad hoc basis as needed and as requested by in-house counsel
Provide project management oversight and coordination with the legal team of all product collaborations, special editions, and sponsorships, including collaborating with contract team, marketing team, and supporting any intellectual property and/or licensing reviews
Anticipate legal tasks independently and provide practical business advice and legal information on legal topics, escalating to in-house attorneys as needed and in a timely manner
Compile reports and metrics for key leaders through dashboard summaries of all trademark and brand protection work
Support docketing work, as needed, by inputting deadlines, saving files and emails, running reports, and/or coordinating with outside counsel or docketing clerk to manage deadlines and maintain files
Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree preferred, Paralegal Certificate a plus
3+ years at a law firm or inhouse IP position
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
