Naval Architecture Technologist providing engineering services in naval architecture for BMT. Collaborating within teams to support design, installation, and integration for marine platforms.
Responsibilities
Support Naval Architecture department in providing engineering services to internal and external customers.
Independently undertake technical work which requires coordination with colleagues and making a substantial contribution to assigned projects.
Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
Comply with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
Undertake engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice under the guidance of senior staff members.
Work within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
Demonstrate willingness and active adoption of coaching and mentoring provided by senior staff, and support with mentorship to junior staff in developing technical competency.
Contributes to building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.
Knowledge of ship and/or submarine design aspects, awareness of staged design development and maintaining design intent.
Support the installation, design, and integration of new and replacement equipment, including communicating design outputs using 2D drawings or 3D models.
As part of a team, participate in the end-to-end ship or submarine survey process including: Development of survey packages from technical documentation including: Condition surveys, Area and space surveys, and Engineering Change (EC) surveys.
Conduct visual inspections and condition surveys on marine structures (including submarines) in a heavy industrial environment.
Produce survey reports which compile inspection findings including reports in client, Class or Standard designated formats.
Applies knowledge to resolve technical issues of moderate scope and complexity using proven approaches and techniques including: Development of design or technical specifications to resolve complex repairs. Identification and assessment of the results from Non-Destructive Testing before and after repairs. Assessment of structures against relevant codes and standards to determine whether repairs or changes are required. Provide input to risk assessments for design or repair specifications.
Requirements
A College Technologist Diploma in Naval Architecture.
Minimum 4 years of experience in Naval Architecture.
Minimum 2 years of experience working within the ship repair domain.
Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
NACE Level 2 qualified inspector.
Provincial certification for Engineering Technologists.
Practical experience working with marine platform systems (small or large boats).
Experience working in a fast-paced commercial shipyard environment, which requires entry into confined spaces.
Strong communication and technical reporting writing experience.
Ability to work independently and to learn without formal instruction.
