About the role

  • Investigator managing compliance with Oregon’s Government Ethics laws for the Oregon Government Ethics Commission. Conducting investigations, drafting reports, and providing legal advice to public officials.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing investigation requests/complaints alleging possible violations of Oregon’s Government Ethics Law, Lobby Law, and Public Meetings Law
  • Evaluating and determining whether OGEC should proceed with an investigation
  • Conducting thorough investigations into possible law violations
  • Drafting lengthy reports outlining relevant details related to the complaint, identifying applicable statutory provisions and recommending OGEC action
  • Assessing civil penalties for non-compliance with Oregon laws/rules
  • Explaining Government Ethics Law, Lobby Law, and Public Meetings Law and rules
  • Answering the public’s questions about OGEC’s jurisdiction
  • Presenting reports to OGEC’s Commissioners at public meetings
  • Providing written and verbal advice to public officials, lobbyists, and members of the public.

Requirements

  • Four years experience doing administrative research that included compiling and evaluating facts to recommend management action or to decide compliance with program guidelines and regulations.
  • Two of the four years must be above the technical support level.
  • Note: college-level course work may substitute for experience on the basis of 45-quarter units per year, up to a maximum of three years.
  • Transcripts may be required if you are using education to qualify during the candidate selection process.
  • Review Oregon Statutes, Administrative Rules and Attorney General opinions and apply them to real and hypothetical circumstances
  • Identify relevant and pertinent facts and information from phone calls, interviews and documents
  • Analyze complex and diverse issues
  • Effectively communicate and present complex information, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences
  • Adapt communication styles to fit situations as they arise
  • Write thorough and logical reports that reach conclusions and make recommendations supported by law and fact
  • Exhibit thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing tasks, no matter how small or large
  • Maintain a professional exchange of perspectives
  • Demonstrate a willingness to contribute to a positive, respectful, and productive work environment
