About the role

  • Systems Engineering Intern supporting digital transformation initiatives for infrastructure agencies at Arcadis. Gaining hands-on experience in system engineering, digital innovation, and business analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the team on projects related to Digital Asset Management including business process reviews, data analytics, asset management systems planning and implementation, and digital transformation initiatives centred around municipal public works sectors including transportation, water/wastewater, urban forestry, and capital planning.
  • Preparing reports, abstracts, memos, and presentations communicating methods and/or outcomes of the systems engineering process for technical and business leader audiences.
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement initiatives by preparing engagement material, questionnaires, and meeting minutes.
  • Documenting business processes, user needs, and/or gaps in existing processes and systems.
  • Developing workflow diagrams, functional requirements, technical requirements, and system specifications for existing and future systems.
  • Identifying, designing, and/or building AI or data solutions for digital transformation initiatives.
  • Identifying client needs for the development of strategic and implementation plans at the organizational level or for specific projects/programs.
  • Data processing and analysis using programming languages and statistical software packages.
  • Cleaning, processing, and management of spatial data using GIS and spatial databases to support the development of web mapping applications.
  • Summarizing data and reporting findings by preparing maps, tables, graphs, charts, diagrams, and graphics.
  • Designing and building interactive data visualization tools and dashboards.
  • Supporting business development and proposal initiatives.

Requirements

  • Completion of at least two years of an engineering or mathematics program is preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be able to articulate a strong interest in a career in systems engineering, digital asset management, or digital transformation.
  • They must be able to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • The role requires the ability to communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, and actionable manner through oral discussions, technical writing, and presentations.
  • Candidates should also be skilled in documenting and communicating complex business processes and user needs, and in relating these to functional requirements and system specifications.
  • Experience working with municipal public works business units—such as transportation, transit, water, urban forestry, and capital planning—is considered an asset, as is experience in stakeholder engagement, business process review, and system specification development.
  • Additional assets include experience with relational and/or non-relational databases (including design and querying), manipulating large datasets, and programming in Python, R, SQL, or JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with mapping tools such as ArcGIS and QGIS, as well as proficiency in dashboarding and business intelligence tools such as Power BI and Tableau, is also valuable.
