About the role

  • Lead design consulting projects within Sheffield's infrastructure development, ensuring operational excellence and client satisfaction at Amey Consulting. Combine strategic leadership to drive team performance and commercial success.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the delivery of design consulting projects to budget, on time, and with positive client satisfaction
  • Develops and implements robust strategies to optimised margin targets, with full P&L responsibility for the contract area
  • Ensures optimal use of Consulting resources and fosters collaboration with technical practices and the wider business and supply chain where appropriate
  • Leads day-to-day contract performance, including regular site and office visits (min. 3 days per week)
  • Maintains strong client relationships through regular reviews and proactive issue management
  • Identifes and manages risks to delivery, developing contingency plans as needed
  • Drives service excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement, sharing best practice across contracts/frameworks
  • Manages mobilisation and demobilisation of projects in line with budget allowances
  • Ensures compliance with Amey governance, systems, tools, processes, and risk management standards
  • Contributes to bidding activity and seeks additional revenue opportunities through business development
  • Promotes a strong health and safety culture aligned to Amey’s Zero Code, ensuring safe processes, procedures, and behaviours
  • Champions a culture of innovation, encouraging the team to seek out and implement new ideas and improvements in project delivery and operational practices
  • Sets and communicates a clear vision for the delivery team, aligning project outcomes with broader business objectives and client needs.
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with client stakeholders, ensuring regular feedback loops and acting on client input to enhance satisfaction
  • Systematically captures client feedback, compliments, and testimonials to support future work winning and continuous improvement.
  • Implements systematic risk and opportunity management processes, with regular reviews at project, programme and portfolio levels
  • Ensures lessons learned and best practices are captured and shared across teams to drive performance improvement and mitigate future risks.
  • Promotes and embeds a Target Zero culture, ensuring safety, environmental, and quality compliance in all activities
  • Conducts regular wellbeing check-ins and audits, including cross-team audits, to continually improve processes and team engagement
  • Encourages prompt reporting and resolution of close calls and incidents.
  • Demonstrate experience and understanding of complex contracts (e.g., NEC3/NEC4), including change and risk processes
  • Takes ownership of delivery budgets, ensuring robust financial management and performance against targets

Requirements

  • A strong track record delivering large, complex, multi‑disciplinary engineering projects
  • Excellent project management capability and commercial acumen
  • Experience working within a consultancy and matrix‑structured organisation
  • Strong communication, influencing and relationship‑building skills
  • Confidence managing budgets and driving efficiency improvements
  • A natural ability to collaborate, motivate and bring people together
  • Resilience, adaptability and the ability to navigate ambiguity
  • A commitment to high ethical standards and integrity
  • Degree‑qualified or equivalent experience
  • Professional qualification (e.g., Chartered Engineer, Prince2, APM)
  • Leadership/management qualification (desirable)
