About the role

  • News Editor at McMaster University’s student-run newspaper managing stories and volunteers. Responsible for content accuracy and editorial guidelines in the News section.

Responsibilities

  • Assign stories and columns to volunteers
  • Make photo requests and edit articles
  • Lay out the News section of the Silhouette
  • Ensure the section is timely, consistent, and regularly has enough content
  • Maintain a regularly updated online section
  • Supervise section’s weekly Morningfile show on 93.3 CFMU
  • Search for stories on campus by maintaining contacts and visiting University departments
  • Prepare stories for volunteers by providing a list of contacts and suggestions to maintain accuracy
  • Delegate stories to volunteers for written and broadcast formats
  • Ensure accuracy by research and fact-checking
  • Research stories, attend events, and contact involved people
  • Ensure stories are accurate, coherent, balanced, grammatical, and well written
  • Communicate with Multimedia Editor to ensure proper story construction

Requirements

  • Experience with writing (previous experience with the Silhouette an asset)
  • Computer training needed before September
  • Rudimentary knowledge of media
