About the role
- News Editor at McMaster University’s student-run newspaper managing stories and volunteers. Responsible for content accuracy and editorial guidelines in the News section.
Responsibilities
- Assign stories and columns to volunteers
- Make photo requests and edit articles
- Lay out the News section of the Silhouette
- Ensure the section is timely, consistent, and regularly has enough content
- Maintain a regularly updated online section
- Supervise section’s weekly Morningfile show on 93.3 CFMU
- Search for stories on campus by maintaining contacts and visiting University departments
- Prepare stories for volunteers by providing a list of contacts and suggestions to maintain accuracy
- Delegate stories to volunteers for written and broadcast formats
- Ensure accuracy by research and fact-checking
- Research stories, attend events, and contact involved people
- Ensure stories are accurate, coherent, balanced, grammatical, and well written
- Communicate with Multimedia Editor to ensure proper story construction
Requirements
- Experience with writing (previous experience with the Silhouette an asset)
- Computer training needed before September
- Rudimentary knowledge of media
