About the role

  • Head of Engineering leading a high-performing engineering organization at a fintech company providing capital to SMEs. Overseeing system design, technical direction, and AI tooling adoption.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Engineering Strategy & Team Build and develop a high-performing engineering organisation of 15+ engineers and engineering managers. Strengthen the culture, processes, and communication discipline that enable autonomous, high-quality delivery across distributed EU/UK/US timezones. You'll own engineering career frameworks, manager development, and the hiring bar.
  • Own Technical Architecture Partner with the CTO to set and enforce technical direction across the full platform stack. Lead architecture reviews, own governance frameworks, and make consequential build/buy/integrate decisions, particularly as we modernise underwriting automation and onboard new marketplace data partners. You'll be the person who identifies structural fragility before it becomes operational risk.
  • Drive AI-Powered Productivity Lead the organisation's adoption of AI tooling across the full development lifecycle: code generation, testing, documentation, and incident response. Set expectations, track impact, and make high-leverage AI usage a team norm rather than an individual habit. You'll have a credible, hands-on point of view here, not a delegated one.
  • Enforce Engineering Discipline Own delivery cadences, planning hygiene, cross-squad coordination, and accountability structures. Build the processes that keep a fast-moving team aligned without bureaucracy. Establish and maintain clear ownership boundaries across squads to prevent fragmentation and information silos.
  • Enable Cross-functional Impact Partner with Risk, Product, and Operations to ensure engineering output translates directly into business outcomes: faster credit decisions, higher automation rates, and new partner integrations. Assess the cost and feasibility of new technical initiatives and communicate tradeoffs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in engineering roles, with at least 3 leading engineering managers in high-growth environments
  • Proven track record delivering complex, distributed systems in production; fintech, marketplace, or other data-intensive domains strongly preferred
  • Deep fluency with GCP, Kubernetes, BigQuery, and event-driven architectures; you can hold your own in a system design review with a senior engineer
  • Strong understanding of API integrations, automated data pipelines, and the infrastructure tradeoffs that matter at scale
  • Active, hands-on user of AI development tooling with demonstrated experience scaling adoption across a team
  • Ability to balance immediate delivery pressure with long-term architectural health and communicate that balance clearly upward
  • Commercial acumen to assess the engineering cost of new initiatives against their business value
  • Experience operating in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments is a strong plus
  • Low tolerance for ambiguous ownership, process theatre, and information silos; you build systems that eliminate them.
