About the role

  • Radiation Therapist administering radiation therapy at UMass Memorial Health in Fitchburg. Delivering high-quality care and safety in radiological treatment as part of the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, prepares, and delivers a prescribed course of radiation to patient
  • Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient-identification prior to treatment
  • Explains procedure to patient as means of communication during treatment
  • Answers questions and reassures patient
  • Reinforces physician’s advice to patient regarding reactions to treatment and to care
  • Administers radiation therapy treatments observing radiation safety measures for patients and personnel
  • Transfers patient safety to treatment table, giving special care to catheters, I.V.’s, and the like
  • Monitors patient and equipment during treatment
  • Maintains patient markings
  • Maintains simulation room
  • Assists Radiation (Oncologist) and Physicist in simulation of patients prior to radiation treatments
  • Observes patient for unusual reactions and reports to supervisor or others
  • Maintains departmental records
  • Updates patient charts as required
  • Maintains records of daily treatment
  • Schedules patient appointments
  • Assists in care and maintenance of facilities, equipment and supplies
  • Maintains work area in clean, orderly and safe condition
  • Maintains equipment in good working order; makes minor repairs as necessary
  • Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor or others
  • Initiates requisitions for supplies as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy
  • If not registered upon hire, the employee will have 1 year to obtain certification as a condition of continued employment
  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts license in Radiation Therapy
  • Graduate of CAHEA-approved Radiation Therapy Technology Program (preferred)
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge
  • Effective verbal and written communication skill
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work cooperatively with all members of the healthcare team
