About the role

  • Security System Technician managing integrated security systems across City facilities. Responsible for maintenance, installation and emergency responses for security systems and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • To design, implement and maintain integrated security systems across City facilities.
  • Ensuring alignment with corporate policies, operational needs and compliance standards and to develop long-term security strategies, integrating emerging technologies, and leading large-scale projects to enhance security infrastructure.
  • Provide overall security services to City owned and/or operated properties through the maintenance of various security systems and respond to routine and emergency security system failures.
  • Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements.
  • Designing complex, integrated security systems that combine access control, CCTV, intrusion detection and intercom systems across diverse City facilities considering specific security needs, technological compatibility and scalability.
  • Conducts research into assigned area ensuring that such research considers developments within the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives by other levels of government.
  • Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations.
  • Creating long-term strategies for security infrastructure including leading efforts to upgrade or replace aging systems and integrating emerging technologies requiring comprehensive knowledge of multiple security domains.
  • Responsible for working with various City divisions to ensure that security systems align with corporate policies and operational goals.

Requirements

  • Considerable experience performing security system installations and corrective maintenance at commercial and industrial properties within the Electronic Security System industry.
  • Education, training and/or certification in a discipline pertinent to the job function, or the equivalent combination of education and industry related experience.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class "G" Driver's License and qualify to obtain and maintain a City Driver's Permit.
  • Considerable experiencing installing, programing and troubleshooting large scale IP based access control and CCTV systems such as C-Cure, Milestone, DSC, Commend, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of computer networking, including IP Addresses, Subnets, Multicast audio/video, etc.
  • Knowledge of electronic test equipment such as AC/DC digital multimeters, AC line tester/monitors, AF generators, battery testers, event recorders, and ground-loop recorders.
  • Ability to operate and maintain computerized state of the art security equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain clear, concise, and legible work order reports, detailed records and correspondence using a computer and a variety of software applications including Microsoft Office Suite, mainframe systems, databases, etc.
  • Ability to follow security standards, work plans, and policies and procedures.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills, including problem solving, decision making and communication skills with the ability to respond to staff and the public in a courteous and effective manner.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to set priorities, plan and execute tasks, meet designated deadlines, often within time restraints and exercise discretion.
  • Ability to report to various work sites to carry out security systems related duties.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of common security policies and various related Acts, Codes, and legislation including the Fire Code, Human Rights Code, WHMIS, etc. that apply to this work.
  • Knowledge in applying the Occupational Health & Safety Act, including confined space entry, ladder safety and other safety procedures and regulations applicable to the above work.
  • Familiar with City of Toronto, including location of streets, property locations, etc.
  • Ability to maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the required duties in all weather conditions including the ability to lift, work at heights, in confined spaces and the ability to climb ladders, lifts and/or scaffolding.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to provide and pass a Criminal Record Check with Judicial Matters to the satisfaction of Corporate Security.
  • Familiarity with managing budgets or financial resources related to security system projects, including tracking expenditures, forecasting costs, and ensuring alignment with approved budget limitations.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies in the security domain, such as AI-based surveillance, IoT devices, and real-time analytics, with the ability to evaluate, implement, and integrate these technologies into existing systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering training programs for technical staff and end users, including creating instructional materials, conducting hands-on sessions, and assessing training effectiveness.
