About the role
- Accountant supporting an Australia-based finance team by managing accounting operations remotely. Requires strong Australian accounting experience and Xero proficiency.
Responsibilities
- Handle daily bookkeeping and accounting functions using Xero
- Process vendor bills, customer invoices, daily transactions, and general ledger postings
- Perform reconciliations for bank, credit card, and GL accounts accurately and on schedule
- Maintain accurate financial records across Xero and related systems
- Apply and validate correct GST treatment for bills and invoices
- Assist in preparing BAS and activity statements (experience preferred but not mandatory)
- Ensure coding accuracy to support external accountants responsible for formal tax lodgments
- Support month-end activities including journals, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance checks
- Assist in preparing internal reports and documentation required by the finance team
- Manage the shared accounts inbox and communicate professionally with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders
- Validate and cross-check operational data to ensure accuracy before financial entry
- Work on project-based tasks such as compiling information for the UK VAT return (no prior UK tax experience needed)
- Follow established workflows and financial controls diligently
- Identify discrepancies, escalate issues proactively, and provide recommendations
- Push back confidently when data or coding appears incorrect and resolve issues with the operations team
Requirements
- At least 5 years of accounting experience
- Minimum 3 years of direct Australian accounting from private companies
- Proficiency in Xero (mandatory)
- Strong understanding of GST, basic BAS preparation, and general Australian bookkeeping workflows
- Excellent English communication skills—written and verbal
- Ability to work independently, proactively solve problems, and manage both routine and complex tasks
- Strong Excel skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Proactive and confident in raising accounting concerns or discrepancies
- Comfortable doing both senior-level accounting judgment and daily reconciliations/transaction processing
- High attention to detail and strong analytical thinking
